Crop-DB is implemented based on a relational data model that is being constantly re-developed . The system is comprised of two components, the physical database, and the user interface. The physical database is currently implemented based on MySQL open-source relational database management system technology and is hosted on Google Cloud Platform . Access to physical files of the database is restricted.
A web data portal based on SQL Maestro Technology is developed and a version of it is available at the CropBASE website . The current version of this website provides access for the users to perform the following actions at different tiers:
- Open access: View, filter, sort, and bulk download
- Restricted access: Administration, curation, and data management
The data is currently presented in different tabs for ease of access and update. The data consists of two sections: primary and secondary data. Primary data contain core information regarding crops and their major value chain elements:
- Crop: records related to taxonomy, images, uses, and other general information about the crops
- Nutrition: general nutrition data that is found in the literature. A new section containing anti-nutrients and toxicity is added to record that specific information.
- Agro: records related to adaptation requirements and practical information such as cropping system, management etc.
- Market: currently contains data on prices, potential yield and production of crops.
Secondary data contain descripted options and other information that adds to expalnabilty and extra information.
- Opt: all tables that contain additional information to make the primary data more useful. For example, the accuracy flag for each data point, location; both the address, city and country and the Google Place ID , crop type, etc.
- Datasets that are available online and related to the crops.
- AI: an experimental section that is being developed for data collection using the power of Generative AI.
- Metadata: all data related to metadata of each data point, including their sources, links and people who have collected them.
